Adega de Monção

Adega de Monção

On October 11, 1958, twenty-five Portuguese wine producers signed a document creating Adega Cooperativa Regional de Monção. The cooperative’s first harvest in 1962 included 66 growers. Today, the venture has blossomed to 1,720 members.

The cooperative’s success has allowed significant investment in its facilities, processes, and its ability to market its wine around the world. Growth, award-winning wine, and modernization, including a solar power system, have contributed greatly to the economy of the region. Hundreds upon hundreds of families owe their living to the region’s vibrant wine industry and to Adega de Monção.

The founding of Adega de Monção was inspired by the determination and spirit of cooperation of the legendary Deu-La-Deu Martins. During the fourteenth-century Fernandine Wars, Monção was the target of a long and painful siege by the Kingdom of Castile.

Food was scarce but Deu-La-Deu Martins collected what little flour remained and baked as many loaves of bread as possible. Then, she climbed the wall and threw them at the enemy. The Castilians, incredulous at the apparent abundance of the Portuguese, conceded defeat.

The municipality of Monção is part of the Demarcated Region of Vinhos Verdes, an area that extends across the entire Northwest of Portugal, also known as Entre-Douro-e-Minho. It is the largest demarcated wine-growing area in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe.

The vineyards of Adega de Monção cover 1,237 hectares, producing 8,000,000 kilos of grapes annually. The soils are mostly granite. Despite high precipitation, the climate is mild. The region’s proximity to the south bank of the river Minho gives the area a particular microclimate. Between steep slopes and open valleys, the wines reflect the nuances of the landscape. Slopes provide protection from the influences of the Atlantic Ocean.
