Azienda Agricola Barbacarlo Comm. Lino Maga 'Montebuono'

Azienda Agricola Barbacarlo Comm. Lino Maga ‘Montebuono’

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Montebuono is a Maga family tradition since 1886, grown on the steep hillsides of Broni — just next door to the legendary Barbacarlo parcel.
  • Rich, dark fruit flavors that showcase everything special about this terroir.
  • The perfect entry point into the Lino Maga world — approachable, delicious, and true to the estate’s roots.
  • Built to age beautifully, rewarding patience with even more depth over time.

Varietal Composition: Ughetta, Croatina, Uva Rara, Barbera

Elaboration: Hand-harvested. Lino Maga eschewed synthetic herbicides and pesticides, relying solely on manual vineyard labor, natural fertilizers, and sustainable farming practices.

Tasting Notes: The Montebuono is drier on the palate while still showing fruity notes, with excellent structure that gives it real aging potential — capable of holding for up to 50 years.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Azienda Agricola Barbacarlo has been farmed by the Maga family since 1886, on steep hillsides in the Oltrepò Pavese near Broni, Lombardy. Comm. Lino Maga built its reputation as one of the region’s great traditional winemakers, often likened to Bartolo Mascarello for his uncompromising, low-intervention style. Since his passing in 2021, his son Giuseppe Maga continues that same steadfast approach, including the long-fought legal battle that made Barbacarlo — named for “uncle Carlo,” the parcel’s original owner — an exclusive monopole in 1983.

The estate farms roughly eight hectares of fifty-year-old native vines (Croatina, Uva Rara, Vespolina) at 300 meters above sea level, without synthetic products, fermenting naturally in World War II-era wooden tini. Only two wines are made: Barbacarlo and Montebuono, each vintage-dependent in style — sometimes bone-dry, sometimes lightly pétillant — and built to age.
