Benmar Springbok Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton
WHY WE LOVE IT
- The Yamhill-Carlton Pinot Noir is a rich and versatile wine that comes from Hirschy Vineyard and a nearby vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton district.
- The Benmar Springbok Pinot Noir label features a photo by Jen Bybee taken during a whale-watching trip to Orcas Island. In the 1960s, the island served as a hunting reserve for exotic animals imported by taxidermy brothers. Local lore tells of a brave Springbok that swam to the island, exposing the business. Today, some of these rare animals can still be found, as they have adapted to the chilly climate.
Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir
Elaboration: Harvested at peak ripeness, the grapes were destemmed and underwent a cold soak to enhance color and aromas. Fermented in small, temperature-controlled tanks, the wine was aged for 15 months in 40% new French oak barrels, gaining added complexity and texture.
Tasting Notes: This Pinot Noir opens with fragrant notes of ripe cherry, wild raspberry, savory hoisin, and umami, interwoven with hints of forest floor and subtle spice. On the palate, silky tannins frame layers of juicy red fruit and earthy undertones, leading to a long, elegant finish. Bright acidity and a touch of minerality highlight the unique terroir of the region, making this a beautifully balanced and expressive wine.
