Bodega Y Cavas de Weinert Carrascal Malbec

Bodega Y Cavas de Weinert Carrascal Malbec

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Carrascal Malbec is the flagship wine of Bodega y Cavas de Weinert.
  • The grapes were grown on selected vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and Maipú.
  • This area has a semi-arid climate and altitudes between 3,000 and 4,000 feet.
  • The vine age is 15 to 60 years
  • The winemaker is Hubert Weber, Bodega & Cavas de Weinert’s main oenologist.

Varietal Composition: 100% Malbec

Elaboration: The grapes are hand-harvested and selected, then fermented in concrete tanks. After a 7 to 10-day alcoholic fermentation and complete malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for about 18 to 20 months in large French oak casks (foudres) before bottling.

Tasting Notes: Notes of ripe plum, black cherry, and blackberry, with subtle floral and earthy undertones. Its palate is medium-bodied with a balanced structure, smooth tannins, and a sweet finish, complemented by hints of licorice, toffee, and vanilla.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Bodega Y Cavas de Weinert is located in Luján de Cuyo, a small town on the outskirts of the city of Mendoza, in western Argentina. It sits at the foot of the Andes Mountains in a region world-famous for its wine production, in particular for the Malbec grape. The winery was founded in 1975 by Don Bernardo Weinert, a Brazilian of German origin. With “wein,” the German word for wine as part of his name, it seemed inevitable that Don Bernardo would make it his life’s work.

His fascination with wine prompted him to take on an extensive and difficult restoration of an old, but architecturally significant winery, originally built in 1890 by a Spanish family. He was joined in the venture by Rául de la Mota, the father of modern Argentinian winemaking, and named the country’s best oenologist of the 20th Century.
