Anciano Wines

Anciano

Anciano is a creation of Britain’s Guy Anderson Wines. The founders are Guy Anderson, a paraglider pilot and entrepreneur, and his wife, Louise, who is responsible for many of the company’s innovative product launches.

Guy Anderson Wines produces fine wines from Spain, Portugal, and Argentina. In Spain, the primary offering is the country’s famed Rioja. The grapes for Anciano Rioja Reserva are sourced from a family-owned vineyard in Criadores de Rioja located near Logroño, at the heart of Rioja Alta. It is just an hour southwest of Pamplona, famed for its running of the bulls.

Winemaker, Norrel Robertson, known as “El Escocés Volante” (The Flying Scotsman), manages the selection and blending of Anciano’s Spanish wines. He has worked in every aspect of winery operations in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and is one of only three Masters of Wine based in Spain. Norrel works closely with local winemakers across Spain to produce award-winning wines with character and attitude.

In central Rioja, grapes are harvested in late September from a selection of low-yielding bush-trained vines with an average age of 35 years. The vineyards are planted on gravel and sandy soils. Ripe, selected grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks with the temperature controlled at 30°C, with maceration of a week to extract color and flavors. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in American oak barrels for 18 months.
