Cantine Volpi
Cantine Volpi’s story began in 1914, when Cristina Volpi and her two teenage sons opened an old tavern, “Il Cappel Verde,” in Tortona, in Italy’s Piedmont region, and started out selling wine by the glass. The family’s location at a crossroads between Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, and Liguria, combined with the growing reputation of local Barbera, helped it expand into new markets within a generation. Today, more than a century later, Cantine Volpi is a well-recognized, multi-generational Italian wine company, led by the fourth and fifth generations of the Volpi family.
In 1999, the family made a deliberate shift toward organic farming, guided by a simple objective: keeping the vineyard soil healthy and biologically active. That means relying only on natural fertilizers, encouraging the insects and predators that keep pests in check, and letting plants grow between the vine rows to support biodiversity. It’s an approach that has shaped the estate’s evolution ever since, carrying Cantine Volpi’s traditional Piedmontese varieties into a more sustainable era while staying rooted in the Colli Tortonesi hills.
