Champagne A. Levasseur Brut “Rue du Sorbier”

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • This champagne is produced from grapes harvest in the oldest plot of the House (1973), located at a place called “Les Gautelleries” in Cuchery. Dosage is 0 grams.
  • Typical of the Marne Valley, Rue du Sorbier is dominated by 80% Pinot Meunier, with 15% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay smattered in.
  • Levasseur was the first producer in Champagne to obtain three sustainable certifications: HVA (Haute Valeur Environmentale), Terra Vitis, and Viticulture Durable.

Varietal Composition: 80% Meunier, 15% Pinot Noir, and 5% Chardonnay

Elaboration: Hand harvested. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. 75% base wine with 25% reserve wine, aged 36 months on the lees. Tangential filtering.

Tasting Notes: The nose is a flurry of yellow fruit aromas (peach, apricot, plum, and pear). Its smell character is followed by a tender and round palate. Both fruity and mature (preserved fruits, tarte Tatin, and honey) with the dominance of Pinot Meunier, it is a unifying champagne wine. Around a table, an aperitif, in the evening, “Rue du Sorbier” will satisfy all lovers!

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Champagne A. Levasseur was started in the 1940s by Albert Levasseur. At that time the estate was focused on supplying large champagne houses with Pinot Meunier, a traditional blending grape.

Today A. Levasseur, under the guidance of Albert’s grandson David, produces a modest 30,000 bottles of champagne per year. The organically grown grapes, mostly Pinot Meunier, come from the winery’s 4 hectares (9.88 acres) of vineyards, consisting of 18 plots situated around the villages of Cuchéry, Fleury-la-Rivière and Châtillon-sur-Marne.
