Chateau d’Yquem ‘Y’ Bordeaux Blanc
WHY WE LOVE IT
- The Chateau d’Yquem “Y” Bordeaux Blanc is a prestigious dry white wine from Bordeaux, a rare offering from the famous sweet wine estate, blending Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.
- This wine is known for aromatic complexity, vibrant acidity, and balance.
- The grapes come from the same plots as the sweet Yquem, picked earlier to avoid noble rot, resulting in a mineral-driven, age-worthy wine.
Varietals: 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 50% Sémillon
Elaboration: The grapes are lightly pressed, and the juice is carefully separated. Fermentation is monitored to preserve freshness and balance Sauvignon Blanc’s vibrancy with the Sémillon’s weight. The wine ages in barrels for 10 to 12 months, using two-thirds from previously used for the Château d’Yquem sweet wine and one-third new oak. Regular lees stirring adds complexity and texture.
Tasting Notes: The wine exhibits vibrant aromas of citrus leaf, sage, and verbena, along with fresh pear and white peach. On the palate, it is lively with citrus flavors like white grapefruit and golden kiwi. Its dense, creamy texture has a high-acid, savory finish marked by grapefruit skin and lingering salinity.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND
Château d’Yquem, the only Premier Cru Supérieur in Sauternes, has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Owned by English kings before passing to the Sauvage family in 1593 and the Lur-Saluces family in 1785, it was acquired by LVMH in 1999. Known for its exceptional sweet wine from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes affected by noble rot, it is celebrated for its richness and aging potential. Historical figures like George Washington and Queen Victoria have admired it, and LVMH aims to maintain its legacy through a blend of tradition and modernization.
