Château Gloria

Henri Martin was born in 1903 in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, into a family that had worked in Bordeaux’s wine trade for nearly 300 years. His father, Alfred Martin, was a cooper, and Henri grew up learning the trade alongside him while dreaming of one day owning vineyards of his own. He got his start in the late 1930s, when he purchased his first hectare of vines — the beginning of a decades-long pursuit. Henri deliberately sought out exceptional plots, often distant, costly-to-maintain parcels belonging to Bordeaux’s classified growth estates, reasoning that only land of that caliber could match the wine he wanted to make. By 1955, Château Gloria’s vineyards included parcels from seven different classified châteaux, four of them ranked among the Second Growths of the 1855 classification. Piece by piece, Henri assembled nearly 50 hectares of vines, making Château Gloria the largest unclassified estate in Saint-Julien.

Henri went on to become a leading figure in Bordeaux, serving as President of the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux starting in 1956 and taking on the administration of Château Latour in 1963. Through the 1960s and ’70s, he crossed the Atlantic regularly to promote Bordeaux wine in the United States, and in 1976 the New York Times Magazine profiled Château Gloria, calling Henri’s rise “miraculous.” In 1981, his success allowed him to fulfill another long-held ambition: buying Château Saint-Pierre, a classified growth in his home village of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, leaving behind two estates instead of one.

Château Gloria’s 50 hectares connect the terroir of all eleven classified growths within the Saint-Julien appellation, and the estate draws on a wide range of soils and microclimates across its vineyard. Its wines are built on a core of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The vineyard achieved organic certification beginning with the 2024 vintage.
