Château Phélan Ségur

It was not by chance that Bernard O’Phelan, a young Irish wine merchant, left his native Tipperary at the end of the 18th century to settle in Bordeaux. The city was then a major trading hub with the British Isles, and close ties between merchant families often led to alliances and marriages. Bernard married a daughter of Daniel Guestier, a well-known Bordeaux wine merchant, and with his father-in-law’s guidance, he began producing his own wines. In 1805 he acquired Clos de Garramey in Saint-Estèphe, followed by the Ségur de Cabanac estate in 1810.

When Bernard died in 1841, the combined estate, then known as Château Ségur de Garramey, passed to his son Frank Phélan. Frank devoted his life to building the property’s reputation and quality and served as mayor of Saint-Estèphe for thirty years. At the turn of the 20th century, the estate took on its modern name, Château Phélan Ségur. For more than thirty years, the Gardinier family guided the property, and they have since passed the reins to Philippe Van de Vyvere, a devoted wine enthusiast for whom taking over the estate fulfilled a long-held ambition.

The vineyard spans 70 hectares of clay-gravel soils across the hillocks and plateaux of Saint-Estèphe, its parcels bordering the vineyards of Châteaux Montrose and Calon Ségur. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot lead the blend, rounded out with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the latter added to the property in 2015. Cabernet Sauvignon lends power and structure, Merlot brings roundness and suppleness, Cabernet Franc adds finesse and floral notes, and Petit Verdot contributes a touch of spice from the estate’s heavier, clay-rich plots.

Meticulous vineyard management paired with modern winemaking techniques, carries that terroir through to the glass, producing wines with rich fruit, real power, and significant aging potential. The result is a style long associated with Saint-Estèphe: classic, elegant, and built on refined tannins, cementing Château Phélan Ségur’s place among Bordeaux’s most respected estates.
