Bosquet des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 'Tradition'

Bosquet des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge ‘Tradition’

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • The Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Tradition Rouge is an authentic, old-school expression of the Southern Rhône valley.
  • Sourced from 40 different parcels across the appellation with vine ages averaging 45 to 50 years old, contributing to the quality and complexity of the wine produced.
  • The soil here is clay-limestone with rounded pebbles that store and release heat, benefiting vine growth. It also includes a mix of clay and sand.

Varietal Composition: 75% Grenache Noir, 12% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 3% Vaccarèse, Counoise, Cinsault

Elaboration: The traditional vinification process takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats, where two-thirds of the grapes are destemmed. Cold pre-fermentation maceration lasts several days to extract aromas, and techniques like *pigeage*, *délestage*, and *remontage* are used during 28 to 35 days of maceration. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 to 18 months in *foudres* and *demi-muids* to enhance its complexity.

Tasting Notes: A lovely purple-red hue with brilliant highlights. On the nose, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape reveals aromas of small red berries. The palate is ample, silky, and velvety.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Domaine Bosquet des Papes is a respected family winery that has been run by the Boiron family for six generations, since 1860. Located in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the Southern Rhône Valley in France, the 32-hectare estate is renowned for its age-worthy red wines. Founded by Emmanuel Boiron, it is now managed by Nicolas and Jeanne-Claire Boiron. Originally called Clos Chantemerle, it was renamed Bosquet des Papes in 1966, meaning “the pope’s grove.”

The winery emphasizes traditional Rhône winemaking practices, focusing on producing wines that express the region’s unique terroir. Its vineyards span around 40 parcels, with an average vine age of 50 years, and some vines ranging from 70 to 100 years. The diverse soils include red sandstone, rolled river pebbles, sandy soils, and clay-limestone subsoils.
