Domaine La Ligière

Domaine La Ligière

Domaine La Ligière is situated in Beaumes de Venise, in southeastern France, about 15 miles northeast of Avignon and only about 50 straight-line miles from the Mediterranean. The estate is owned by Philippe and Elisabeth Bernard. The land has been in the family since 1896 when it was a mixed-crop farm, raising silkworms.

The property’s unique terroir led Maurice Bernard to plant grape vines in the 1950s with the fruit going to a cooperative. In 2008, Maurice’s grandson, Philippe, and his wife, Elisabeth, started making their own wine. Today, Domaine La Ligière is a biodynamic and certified organic winery with 60 hectares of vines spread between four appellations, including Vacqueyras, Gigondas, Beaumes-de-Venise, and Muscat-Beaumes-de-Venis.

Not far from the Dentelles de Montmirail, a small mountain range, the region receives bountiful sunshine and is cooled by the Mistral breeze. The vineyard is planted on a plateau at around 80 meters in elevation. Vines have an average age of 50 years (up to 75 years on the oldest plot).

Vines are cultivated without fertilizer, weed killer, or any chemical treatment. The sandy-clay and limestone soil is plowed regularly and fertilized with organic compost in the fall. Harvest is manual. In the cellar, no yeasts are added and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration.
