Laurent Martray Brouilly Sur Pierreux

Domaine Laurent Martray Brouilly “Sur Pierreux”

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • The vines for the Brouilly “Sur Pierreux” date from 1975-1945-1920 and are from the Pierreux terroir based in the village of Odenas.
  • The vineyard has a Western exposure, with surface soils of Granitic and clayey in depth.
  • Organically grown. No pesticides.

Varietal Composition: 100% Gamay

Elaboration: Hand harvesting, sorting and destemming. Burgundian winemaking with long half-carbonic maceration and barrel aging (10/12 months). Vinification is made without So2, which is added only during the aging process. No pumping over, with one or two light cap punching.

Tasting Notes: “The 2022 Brouilly Sur Pierreux brings intensity and opens with aromas of red and black cherries, muddled blackberries, lilac blossoms and sweet oak spice. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a supple concentration of fruit that marks the attack, followed by fine but abundant tannins that gain traction for texture, revealing a trace of salinity on the finish. In contrast to 2021, there is a dense layer of fruit, further emphasized by the oak influence, that muddles the wine’s overall clarity, though this should resolve with time spent in the bottle.” -Kenna Wells, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Laurent Martray is the third generation of vintners in his family. After studying oenology and viticulture, he started making wine in 1987. In 2019, he purchased some of the finest terroirs within the Brouilly and Côte-de-Brouilly appellations in the famed Beaujolais region of eastern France.

Through his brother, Christian, one of the most recognized sommeliers in France, Laurent was able to meet and learn from some legendary French vintners.
