Domaine de Thulon Beaujolais-Villages Chiroubles

Domaine de Thulon Beaujolais-Villages Chiroubles

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • The grapes are sourced from vineyards with an average age of 50 years.
  • The grapes are sourced from a small vineyard site of 1.6 hectares on a granite hillside with south-west sun exposure.
  • The Chiroubles appellation is often described as being the most “Beaujolais-like” of the 10 individual crus

Varietal Composition: 100% Gamay

Elaboration: The grapes are harvested by hand. Moderate pressing of the whole harvest. Carbonic maceration occurs to achieve optimal aromatics. Alcoholic fermentation is done in vats with the resulting wine aged on fine lees. Light filtration and bottling at the estate in July.

Tasting Notes: Deep ruby. High-pitched red fruit and floral aromas pick up bright mineral and peppery spice nuances in the glass. Juicy and energetic, offering sappy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that show very good focus and a touch of candied flowers. Silky and seamless in texture, displaying strong closing thrust, harmonious tannins and a lingering note of lavender pastille.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

This farm is located on the old estate of Château de Thulon (15th century) and was purchased by Annie and René Jambon in 1987 after they were “métayers” for 20 years there. Their children Carine and Laurent are now running the estate, and a passion for experimentation sets them apart from peers in the region. These are some of the best values in French wine we’ve come across in the last decade.
