Dominio Do Bibei

Dominio Do Bibei Tinto

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Dominio do Bibei is an acclaimed (96+ Wine Advocate), elegant red wine from Galicia’s Ribeira Sacra region in northwest Spain.
  • Known as the “Sacred Riverbank,” this area features steep riverbanks and dramatic canyons, earning a reputation for its “heroic viticulture” in a challenging environment.
  • The grapes for Dominio Do Bibei are sourced from high-altitude plots ranging from 250 to 550 meters, with vines aged between 17 and 35 years. These plots feature abundant white quartz schists and fragmented slate soils.

Varietal Composition: 95% Brancellao, 5% Mouratón with Grao Negro

Elaboration: Grapes are hand-harvested and manually selected in the vineyard and winery. After destemming, they are placed in French oak vats for cold pre-maceration and fermented with indigenous yeasts, with daily punchdowns. The wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation in 500-liter barrels, aging for 20 months in used French oak, followed by an additional 9 months in 12-hectoliter foudres. It is naturally stabilized by winter’s cold before bottling.

Tasting Notes: This wine has unreal finesse from start to finish. Light cherry red with brownish reflections, rather pale. Extremely floral nose, highly refined and almost explosively aromatic, somewhat fragile in the bouquet. Violets, forget-me-nots, jasmine, incense, lavender, rosemary, cinnamon. Elegant, extremely silky and ultra-fine tannins, juicy and very elegant, very chic drinking flow. In addition to its excellent freshness, it is quite wild and spicy, with salty minerality under fine red fruit. Again, that strawberry-raspberry mouthfeel, also floral.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Dominio do Bibei is a well-known low-intervention winery located in Galicia, in Spain’s Ribeira Sacra region. Founded in 2002 by locals returning to their roots, the winery emphasizes native grape varieties and adheres to a “less is more” philosophy. The area is famous for its old terraced vineyards on steep slopes, which support century-old vines at altitudes of 200 to 700 meters, as well as for its unique schist and granite soils. Dominio do Bibei focuses on indigenous varieties, minimal intervention, and a “less is more” philosophy to showcase the rugged, mineral-driven environment. The winery employs gravity-fed production and uses native yeast, opting for concrete and old wood rather than stainless steel to emphasize the region’s distinctive terroir.

The winery adheres to sustainable, organic, and biodynamic principles, with grapes hand-harvested. Dominio do Bibei focuses on low yields and does not use fining or filtering in its processes. Many consider the wines of Dominio do Bibei to be a hidden gem of northern Spain, often likening their style to that of Burgundy.
