Proidl Riesling Alte Reben Senftenberg Kremstal

Proidl Riesling Alte Reben “Senftenberg Kremstal

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • This wine comes from the Kremstal region in Austria.
  • A classic racy and salty Riesling with compact stone fruit. Pure minerality. Amphibolite, paragneiss and slate give the wine individuality and expression.
  • This vineyard is sustainably farmed.

Varietal: 100% Riesling

Elaboration: Harvested by hand in mid-October; a portion of the grapes is destemmed and left on the skins for 6–8 hours of maceration. Fermentation in stainless steel, then maturing for four months on the fine lees in a large wooden cask and stainless steel.

Tasting Notes: Pale yellow-green, silver glints. Fine herbal savouriness, white peach, mineral nuances, followed by hints of lime, but still rather restrained. Complex, taut, green apple, fresh acidity, citrus-mineral reverberations, and exhibiting length. Definite ageing potential.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

The Proidl family have been in Seftenberg since 1650, when they fled their native Bremen (in present-day Germany) during the Thirty Years’ War. By 1738 they were established in the wine trade, and the family business, Weingut Proidl, is now run by Franz and Andrea Proidl, along with their son and winemaker Patrick Proidl, who represent the ninth and tenth generations of the Proidl family in the business. Their sweeping and steep vineyards total twenty-five hectares of vines in the most notable Kremstal single vineyard sites: Ehrenfels, Hochäcker, Pellingen, Pfenningberg and Rameln.
