Lomita Pagano

Lomita Pagano

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Lomita Pagano is from the dry-farmed, estate-owned, old vine Pagano vineyard. The average age of vines is 60+ years.
  • Pagano is grown on the Valle de Guadalupe Estate vineyard which are organically farmed and sustainable vineyards oriented with a gentle slope to the southwest, approximately 11 miles from the Pacific at an elevation of 1,000 ft.
  • This bottling has been named best wine in Mexico on multiple occasions.
  • While this vintage carries on the decadence of the Pagano name, the winemaking team found a way to factor a higher level of internal structure and brighter red berry notes into the mix.

Varietal Composition: 100% Grenache

Elaboration: Fermented in stainless steel tanks with skins and seeds for 3 weeks then racked to 1st use French oak barrels for 12 months.

Tasting Notes: The nose unfolds in layers of stewed strawberries, grilled plum, leather, vanilla, violets and dried herbs. In the mouth, dark berries take over and blend with the vanilla in a composition that reminds one of freshly picked Himalayan black berry cobbler served with vanilla ice cream a al mode.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Hacienda La Lomita was founded in 2009 by Fernando Pérez Castro in the heart of Valle de Guadalupe, Baja, Mexico, north of Ensenada and approximately nine miles from the Pacific near the village of San Antonio de las Minas.

The winery and its estate vineyards are on a northwestern-facing slope in the ejido of Francisco Zarco. Ejido refers to village lands that are communally held in a traditional system of land tenure that combines communal ownership with individual use. The estate grows some of the region’s oldest vines.

The estate has practiced organic viticulture since 2012 and is one of the region’s few certified organic wineries. The vineyard sits at about 1,000 feet in elevation with a soil profile consisting of a mix of clay and granite.
