Henri Bourgeois Sancerre Rouge “ES-56”
WHY WE LOVE IT
- This selection of ancient Pinot Noir vines thrives on southwest-facing hills of flinty clay, known for producing wines with remarkable minerality and intensity.
- From the village of Saint-Satur in the Sancerre appellation, the “ES-56” designation honors a geological heritage dating back 56 million years (Eocene Silex).
- This cuvée offers profound concentration and delicate structure, promising both immediate enjoyment and future potential.
- Experience the timeless elegance and complexity of this remarkable wine.
Varietal Composition: 100% Pinot Noir
Elaboration: Alcoholic fermentation is performed in vats for 10 to 14 days at temperatures between 26 and 32°c. Throughout this process, the cap is punched and the must pumped over twice daily so as to maximize the extraction of color and tannins. Malolactic fermentation takes place in Tronçais forest oak barrels. When completed, the wine is racked and barrel aged for 10 to 12 months. Once bottled, this wine is aged (depending on the vintage) 8-24 months before release.
Tasting Notes: This ruby and garnet-colored wine develops very ripe red fruits aromas with hints of morello cherries, plums and a touch of vanilla. The old vines and low yields produce a very concentrated and well-structured cuvée heralding good ageing potential. Under ideal conditions, this wine could age a decade or more.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND
For ten generations now the Bourgeois family has devoted its passion and values to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, becoming Sancerre’s most well-known producer. The company is now led by the current generation of the family – Jean-Marie and Remi Bourgeois. The winery and family base is the village of Chavignol, and Domaine holdings can be found on a mosaic of plots throughout Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Each plot is isolated and worked in respect of its origin to reveal, in the most precise and true way, the expression of its terroir, whether we are talking Kimmeridgian marls, flint, or limestone clay soils. We see this expressed in a dizzying array of bottlings, many of which are amongst the most sought after of their kind in the Loire each year.
