Hiruzta Txakolina Tinto

Hiruzta Txakolina Tinto

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • The winery’s own 14 ha. vineyard is located in the surroundings of the winery itself, at the foothills of Jaizkibel Mountain. It is oriented towards the mid-day sun which protects it from the wind and damp of the nearby Cantabrian sea, thereby enjoying excellent sunshine.
  • Soil with a thick bedrock layer and clayish marly.
  • This is Hiruzta’s first vintage of their estate grown tinto.
  • Red wine production from this region is rare and production is extrememly limited.

Varietal Composition: 100% Hondarrabi Beltza

Elaboration: Once the harvest is destemmed and crushed, it is fermented in stainless steel. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation. It remains in the barrels on its lees for 10 months until bottled. French oak barrels are used to preserve the fruit longer in the wine.

Tasting Notes: Picota cherry color with rich aromas of red and black fruits where strawberry and blackcurrant stand out over a balsamic background and fine vegetal notes. Very fresh on the palate with balanced acidity.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

The name Hiruzta means “a three-person harvest” in Basque, referring to winery owners Asensio Rekalde and his sons Txarli and Angel, whose shared dream of creating a winery in Hondarribia is now a reality.  Txakoli production in this village dates back to 1186, however the tradition was lost during a long stretch of sieges and battles that took place there in the early 1600’s.   Through years of work the Rekalde family has recovered and revitalized Hondarribia’s viticultural heritage, with nine vineyard plots that sit in the Jaizkibel foothills that surround the winery.
