Langmeil Blacksmith Cabernet Sauvignon
WHY WE LOVE IT
- In 1842 a 32 year old Blacksmith, Christian Auricht, arrived from Prussia with his wife and four children. He settled in the new hamlet of Langmeil and built a blacksmith shop in what became the village’s trading area. His original shop remains a feature of the winery’s heritage today.
- A longer than normal pressing of the fruit means a richer and more concentrated Cabernet.
Varietal Composition: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Elaboration: The harvest is hand-picked and delivered to the winery, where they are gently worked through the de-stemmer before being transferred to open fermenters. The juice is pumped over twice a day for seven days to extract, homogenize and regulate temperature before draining and hand loading the basket press by shovel. The skins are then gently pressed for approximately 20 hours to retrieve more of the essence of the grape. The pressings juice is then blended with the free run juice, collected earlier. After each wine destined for barrel has completed its malolactic fermentation, it is matured in new and seasoned and French oak barrels (18% new and 82% old) for 22 months prior to bottling. Langmeil does not fine its wine and uses only minimal filtration during all stages of wine production to guarantee individuality, quality and longevity.
Tasting Notes: Deep crimson with purple hues. Lifted blueberries, black currants and black olive dominate the aroma, with lovely cedar and hints of licorice and sweet spice adding to the complexity. Bright and rich berry fruits coat the palate and mingle with brambly spice, hints of black olive and licorice. Full bodied with velvety, fine, grape and oak tannin adding to the structure which flows onto the long, fruitful and spicy finish.
