Obsidian ‘Triple Junction’ Red Blend
WHY WE LOVE IT
- Triple Junction wine is a unique blend created by the convergence of three tectonic plates that form the subduction volcanoes of California and the Pacific Northwest (25% California, 67% Washington, 8% Oregon).
- The Cabernet Sauvignon is from the Obsidian estate vineyard, the Malbec is sourced from the fractured basaltic soils of Red Mountain in Washington, and Tempranillo from the volcanic ash slopes in Echo, Oregon.
- Triple Junction unites the distinct characters of each region with a thread of volcanic minerality, freshness and structure that runs through the wines from all three sources.
Varietal Composition: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Malbec, 15% Petite Sirah, 8% Tempranillo
Elaboration: The wine is aged 12 months in Hungarian Kádár Tokaj two+-year-old barrels. This Kádár Hungary cooperage is owned by Obsidian Wine Co. These super-tight-grain barrels are low in vanillan and relatively high in eugenol, which tends to emphasize herbal and spice components, and are toasted slowly at low temperatures to avoid imparting overt toasty notes.
Tasting Notes: This wine is intensely structured, with dense, rich, round fruit flavors woven with spice and savory characters.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND
Obsidian Wine Co. was founded in 2002 by Michael Terrien, Peter Molnar, and Arpad Molnar. It is located in the Mayacamas Mountains of Sonoma. The Molnar family immigrated from Hungary in 1956. They began farming in Napa Valley before establishing their vineyard. The vineyard is on a former walnut orchard at an elevation of half a mile. It is situated on volcanic terrain made of black obsidian glass. Winemaker Alex Beloz, with over a decade of experience, ages their California Cabernet Sauvignon in Hungarian oak barrels from Kádár, Hungary. The estate’s unique climate and soil contribute to the production of distinctive California wines.
