Petrussa Schioppettino di Prepotto

Petrussa Schioppettino di Prepotto

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • This wine comes from Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the northeast corner of Italy. The appellation is Colli Orientali del Fruili.
  • Grapes are organically-grown and hand-harvested.
  • This wine is best served at 18°C.

Varietal Composition:  100% Schioppettino

Elaboration:  Petrussa Schioppettino di Prepotto is developed using the Guyot training system. The grapes are harvested by hand in October and fermented in barriques for 18 months. They are aged in bottle for 8 months prior to being released.

Schioppettino, also called “ribolla nera,” has been around since the 13th century in Friuli. Saved from the brink of extinction, it came back to light in the 1970s. The Prepotto area of Friuli is the most famous area for this peppery red varietal.

Tasting Notes: Peppery, elegant, and fruity, medium-bodied with smooth tannins and bright acidity, this is a graceful wine with lots of depth and concentration.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

It was 1986 when Paolo and Gianni Petrussa decided to dedicate their lives to the family farm, trying to follow up on the great work and commitment made during the two previous generations by their grandfather Giuseppe and, subsequently, by their father Celestino. The decision left Celestino and Giustina, their parents, speechless and it was not difficult to understand why: their choice mentally brought them back to their past, to the hard life in the fields and to the continuous deprivations due to the economic difficulties that rural life imposed.
