Turasan Kalecik Karasi

Turasan Kalecik Karasi

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Kalecik Karası is a blue-black grape indigenous to Turkey and known for producing red fruit-forward wines with low to medium tannins and bright acidity.
  • Cappadocia is located on high altitude with limited water supply allowing the grapes to take longer in reaching maturity thereby making the aromas more intense and vibrant.
  • Due to its red fruit orientation and light to medium body, this varietal is often compared to Pinot Noir.

Varietal Composition: 100% Kalecik Karasi (Kah-le-djic Car-ah-ser)

Elaboration: Traditional vinification. Temperature controlled stainless steel and concrete tank fermentation. Post fermentation aging done in a combination of stainless steel and cement tanks for 5 months

Tasting Notes: Light to medium bodied, soft tannins with aromas of red fruit, raspberry, red currant and cherries

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Turasan winery was established in 1943 by Hasan Turasan in Cappadocia. Since then the winery has been run by the Turasan family for 3 generations and they have been proud pioneers in the development of the Cappadocia wine region.

Cappadocia, a place that many have defined as magical with its unique peri bacalari (fairy chimneys), has been home to winemaking for more than 7,000 years. Hittites, Byzantines, and the Turks have all played a role in developing the wine culture that modern day Cappadocia embraces today.

Most indigenous grapes of Turkey are also grown in Cappadocia. However, the region is also known for being unique in producing Emir, the primary native white grape of Cappadocia and a favorite since the Hittite era. Emir thrives in the region’s volcanic soils and benefits from its unique microclimate: high altitude, hot days and cool nights.

It is loyal to this region only and does not grow anywhere else in the world thereby positioning it uniquely in its ability in producing fresh and elegant wines. The Turasan winery is located in the heart of Cappadocia giving it a natural advantage in producing the freshest and finest Emir along with other indigenous varietals. Kalecik Karasi, another indigenous grape, from this region demonstrates much concentrated and fresh aromas due to the unique Cappadocia climate. Turasan wines create an exquisite wine experience by blending all these unique aromas into your glass.

The 3rd Turasan generation, led by Hasan Turasan, is committed to producing high quality wines with solid investments in vineyards and the latest winemaking technology. Turasan considers their cultural, geographical and historical heritage as their fundamental values. They pride themselves as being the first privately established winery of the region and their production philosophy continues to be guided by the quality of their products and the satisfaction of their consumers rather than the amount of wine they produce. Turasan is an absolute 70+ year legend that hails from the heart of Turkey.
