Vignamato Versiano Classico Superiore

Vignamato ‘Versian’ Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC Classico Superiore

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Versiano Verdicchio Classico Superiore is Vigamato’s most historic wine, dating back to the 1100s. At that time, the region was known as Versiano and developed around a Benedictine monastery.
  • The wine is produced from two single vineyards, established in 1977, 1985, and 1995, located in San Paolo di Jesi and Cupramontana. These vineyards range in altitude from 300 to 500 meters above sea level and face northeast.
  • Farmed organically, the soil consists of clay and sandstone below, with limestone above.
  • Versiano has excellent potential for aging.

Varietal Composition: 100% Verdicchio

Elaboration: The Guyot system is used for vine training. Grapes are hand-harvested in small crates with a staggered approach. After soft pressing and static decantation, fermentation occurs in steel and vitrified concrete tanks at 16–18°C for about three weeks, with no malolactic fermentation. The wine ages for 7–8 months in tanks, followed by 3–4 months in bottle, for a total of 6 months of fining.

Tasting Notes: Straw-yellow with green tints. This wine offers complex fruity and floral aromas. It is dry and velvety, featuring ripe notes of peach and apple.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

In the late 1940s, Umberto Ceci acquired land in the Battinebbia district of San Paolo di Jesi for Verdicchio grape production. He passed this land to his son, Amato, and his wife, Maria, who were enthusiastic winemakers. Their son, Maurizio, and his wife, Serenella, later took over, launching the “Vignamato” project — meaning “Amato’s vineyard”— in the early 2000s to honor Umberto’s vision for Verdicchio’s potential.

Now in its fourth generation, Vignamato is run by Maurizio and Serenella’s children—Alessandra, Andrea, and Francesco. They focus on low yields, responsible land management, and chemical-free practices. The grapes are hand-harvested, and wines are matured in glass-lined concrete containers and steel, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and family tradition.
