Villa Huesgen

The Huesgen family has grown and traded wine on the Mosel since 1735. Today, Ado Huesgen runs the estate, the eighth generation of the family. Its heart is the family home in Traben-Trarbach, an Art Nouveau villa built in 1904 on the Middle Mosel, which gives the winery its name.

The estate is small, with 6.7 hectares spread across six vineyard sites around Traben-Trarbach, Enkirch and Ürzig. Many are steep slate slopes held up by old dry-stone walls, which the family works to preserve. Most of the work is done by hand. The family farms sustainably, with natural cover crops and no insecticides, and the steepest slopes are farmed fully organically. Some of the vines are very old and still grow on their own roots.

In the cellar, the approach is minimalist and natural. The grapes are picked selectively by hand and pressed gently. Most wines ferment spontaneously with native yeasts and rest on their lees to find their own balance. Riesling is the focus, alongside Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. The family’s guiding idea is simple: wines inspired by nature and made by people who enjoy their work.
