Villa Huesgen Riesling "Enkircher Steffensberg Kabinett Feinherb"

Villa Huesgen Riesling “Enkircher Steffensberg Kabinett Feinherb”

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • From the Enkircher Steffensberg, a south-facing steep-slope site rated in the top class of the historic Prussian vineyard classification, with copper-red and grey slate soils that give the wine its powerful structure.
  • Made from vines 30–50 years old.
  • A feinherb, or off-dry, Kabinett with a gentle touch of sweetness.
  • Versatile at the table, from aperitif to spicy Asian dishes or a light dessert.
  • Aging potential of 10 years and more.

Varietal: 100% Riesling

Elaboration: The vineyard is farmed sustainably. The grapes are hand-picked in small bunches, so only healthy, fully ripe fruit is used. The wine ferments spontaneously in stainless steel tanks after a longer skin-contact time.

Tasting Notes: Bright golden yellow. Lemon, white nectarine, rosemary, Thai basil and mineral notes with a hint of smoke. Juicy, playful yellow fruit, lively acidity and fine minerality, with a long finish.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Villa Huesgen has made and traded wine on the Mosel since 1735 and is now run by Ado Huesgen, the eighth generation. The estate centers on the family’s 1904 Art Nouveau villa in Traben-Trarbach.

Its 6.7 hectares of steep slate vineyards around Traben-Trarbach, Enkirch and Ürzig are farmed sustainably and mostly by hand, with the steepest slopes farmed organically. In the cellar, the family keeps things natural, with hand harvesting and spontaneous fermentation. Riesling is the heart of the range.
