Weingut Helenental
The roots of today’s Helenental Kelleri (winery) can be found in the former Retz-Röschitz wine cooperative, founded in 1942 in Weinviertel, Austria’s largest specific wine-growing region (14,001 hectares). The winery is located in the village of Röschitz in the district of Horn in the state of Lower Austria. It is just 10 miles from the Czech border.
The cooperative, home to many award-winning wines, closed in 2013 and the winery is now owned and managed by Walther Schnopfhagen & Manfred Bannert. Walther grew up around the wine business and continues the tradition of collaboration between the region’s winegrowers.
Evidence shows that viticulture in the region may date back to 800 BCE, some of the oldest domesticated vines in Central Europe. Helenental vines cover 200 hectares with a focus on traditional Austrian grape varieties such as Grüner Veltliner and Zweigelt. Riesling and Pinot Blanc are also vinified. Under the direction of winemaker Ludwig Wally, the estate practices sustainable methods.
The soil is primarily rock and loess and the climate is characterized by warm, dry summers and cold winters with little snow. Autumn brings sunny days and cool northern breezes. Temperatures fluctuate significantly from day to night.
