Weingut Wohlmuth Gelber Muskateller Ried Steinriegl
WHY WE LOVE IT
- Family run winery for nearly 200 years.
- Because the vineyards are extremely steep, the grapes must be hand- picked from sparse slate soils.
- Weingut Wohlmuth engages in Eco-friendly vinification practices, using no herbicides or pesticides.
Composition: Gelber Muskateller
Elaboration: Steinriegl is a very steep (up to 78% inclination), high altitude, top single vineyard that is facing south-southwest. It produces highly flavor-intense wines with pronounced minerality. This vineyard was referred to as one of the best single-vineyards of Styria for centuries. Since vintage 2018, this very special single vineyard is classified as STK Premier Cru (high quality designation). It’s soils are phyllite red slate with quartz inclusion. The winemaking takes place very late. The grapes are selectively hand picked. There is a short maceration period and they are then gently, very slowly, pressed. The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation in big old wooden casks and continues for 11 months on yeast.
Tasting Notes: Aromatic, very grapey muscat notes, black pepper, ripe mandarins, a Gelber Muskateller with depth.
A subtle scent of elderflower rises gently from the glass, eventually domiating the entire nose. The palate is more toned down, holding on to its aromatics and also revealing a certain stony austerity. This is light-footed and fresh, but also concentrated and still young. It is the bright, utterly zesty and intense lemon peel note at the very core that is the promise for the future. ~ Wine Enthusiast

PRODUCER BACKGROUND
Kitzeck im Sausal is a village that deserves high praise. That’s because it boasts the highest-in-elevation wine estates in Austria. But it takes more than a mountaintop to create great wine. It takes many generations of the Wohlmuth family who have been making 100% single-estate-grown wine here since 1803!
