Weingut Wohlmuth Sauvignon Blanc Ried Edelschuh

Weingut Wohlmuth Sauvignon Blanc Ried Edelschuh

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Family run winery for nearly 200 years.
  • Because the vineyards are extremely steep, the grapes must be hand- picked from sparse slate soils.
  • Weingut Wohlmuth engages in Eco-friendly vinification practices, using no herbicides or pesticides.

Varietal Composition: 100% Sauvignon Blanc

Elaboration: Edelschuh is a historic vineyard nd has been referred as one of the best single vineyards since 1322. It produces very mineral driven wines with outstanding aging potential. Because of the high sea altitude the grapes are able to be picked very ripe and still maintain a very good acidity structure. Because of the extreme steepness of the vineyard (up to 90%), the grapes must be picked by hand or with rope winch machines. The very meager slate soil is very much reflected in the wines. The winemaking takes place very late. The grapes are selectively hand-picked, and go through a short maceration period. They are then pressed gently and slowly. The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation in 500 l casks and is aged on yeast for 18 months.

Tasting Notes: Ripe aromas and flavors, dense, finely woven, great spicy notes, minerally – with a huge life ahead.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Kitzeck im Sausal is a village that deserves high praise. That’s because it boasts the highest-in-elevation wine estates in Austria. But it takes more than a mountaintop to create great wine. It takes many generations of the Wohlmuth family who have been making 100% single-estate-grown wine here since 1803!
