Weingut Wohlmuth Sauvignon Blanc Sausaler Schlössl
WHY WE LOVE IT
- Wohlmuth’s Ried Sausaler Schlössl is the highest single vineyard site, which is completely open to the Alps. This extreme exposure means they can harvest very ripe grapes very late and without any botrytis attack, the aromas of which are influenced by the barren slate. This creates taut, complex wines that have a tension between coolness and warmth.
- The vineyard is on a steep slope (up to 70%) with altitudes of 500-590 m. The soils are black phyllitic slate.
- Weingut Wohlmuth engages in Eco-friendly vinification practices, using no herbicides or pesticides.
Varietal Composition: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Elaboration: Very late, selective hand-picking, short maceration time, gentle and slow pressing. Spontaneous fermentation in large used wooden barrels, where it matured on the yeast for 12 months.
Tasting Notes: Light yellow-green, silver reflections. Fine yellow tropical fruit, a hint of pineapple, orange zest, dark, smoky spice. Juicy, elegant, fine yellow fruit, rich in finesse, well-integrated acid structure, mineral-salty nuances, lemony and stimulating, very light-footed, an incredibly precise food accompaniment.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND
Kitzeck im Sausal is a village that deserves high praise. That’s because it boasts the highest-in-elevation wine estates in Austria. But it takes more than a mountaintop to create great wine. It takes many generations of the Wohlmuth family who have been making 100% single-estate-grown wine here since 1803!
