Winners Tank Shiraz Viognier

Winner’s Tank Shiraz Viognier

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • This wine is produced from the same vineyard as the award-winning Winner’s Tank Shiraz. The higher elevated, lower yielding section of the vineyard produces fruit that David Knight and Reid Bosward consider to be unique in character. They harvest this section a week later and keep it separate, aging it in French oak barriques.
  • Single vineyard, estate grown.

Varietal Composition: 95% Shiraz, 5% Viognier

Elaboration: Only 3 acres of Viognier is planted on the property. The yield for this vintage was low at 2t/ acre with the fruit showing intense flower blossom and apricot notes. Shiraz is sourced from the Eskadale Vineyard, picked early it showed vibrant fruit character and great natural acidity.

Tasting Notes: The nose offers uninhibited floral notes and peach blossom by virtue of the dash of Viognier. The palate is expansive and hedonistic with chocolate,  dark cherry plum and white pepper. Tannins are supple and ripe with the weight of the mid palate giving way to a lingering, long lasting finish.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Winner’s Tank highlights what can be accomplished when an extremely talented winemaker gets his hands on some premium, Langhorne Creek fruit. Winner’s Tank is a new venture between Reid Bosward of Kaesler vineyards, and David and Cathy Knight, owners of the Winner’s Tank site. The name relates to an old water tank that sits in the corner of the vineyard. In true Aussie spirit, a strong rivalry exists between the three neighboring towns in the local Australian Rules Football competition. Each year the winning team heads out to the vineyard to paint the tank in their team colors.
