Winners Tank Velvet Sledgehammer Shiraz

Winner’s Tank Velvet Sledgehammer Shiraz

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • This wine is produced from the same vineyard as Hawks Shiraz. The higher elevated, lower yielding section of the vineyard produces fruit that winemaker, David Knight and Reid Bosward consider to be unique in character.
  • They harvest this section a week later and keep it separate from the Hawks Shiraz harvest, aging it in French oak barriques.
  • Single vineyard, estate grown, from a high elevation area of the vineyard and harvested later in the growing season

Varietal Composition: 100% Shiraz

Elaboration: Fermented in stainless steel then removed to used oak barrels. The wine then spends 18 – 24 months in French & American oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: A dark, brooding red with purple hues. An aromatic nose offering abundant cassis with hints of violets and french oak spiciness. The palate is full bodied and well balanced showing dark fruit and chocolate mid palate rounder out by soft silk tannins that contribute to the opulence. The finish is long, with spiciness persisting.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Winner’s Tank highlights what can be accomplished when an extremely talented winemaker gets his hands on some premium, Langhorne Creek fruit. Winner’s Tank is a new venture between Reid Bosward of Kaesler vineyards, and David and Cathy Knight, owners of the Winner’s Tank site. The name relates to an old water tank that sits in the corner of the vineyard. In true Aussie spirit, a strong rivalry exists between the three neighboring towns in the local Australian Rules Football competition. Each year the winning team heads out to the vineyard to paint the tank in their team colors.
