Domaine Brunely Vacqueyras “Les Secrets de la Licorne”

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • The estate mansion has a long history, originating from the Middle Ages, but also Napoleon III resided in this home.
  • This wine is the icon wine of the estate.
  • The Domaine Brunely Vacqueyras name refers to Lord Pellegrin de Brunellis who fought for the Pope in Avignon when their authority was threatened in the Middle Ages. The Pope rewarded him with a Coat of Arm with the Unicorn as well as the property.

Varietal Composition: 60% Grenache, 40% Syrah

Elaboration: Old vines of 50 to 80 years from the plateau of garrigues, a specific terroir, which give very concentrated wine. The maturity of the grapes brings more intense aromas to this cuvee. The grapes are hand sorted and completely destemmed, keeping only the best. They are fermented at a low temperature for  20 to 30 days with stomping several times to enhance the skin-juice contact and to develop a maximum of aromas. The wine is partly aged in oak barrels as well as in concrete tanks for 12 to 18 months. It is filtered before bottling.

Domaine Brunely Vacqueyras Red can be enjoyed young to appreciate the fruit aromas, but can also be kept in your cellar for 10-12 years during which aging aromas will develop.

Tasting Notes: Dense ruby color with garnet shades. Quite intense nose of fine spices, with a fruity touch of red cherries. A beautiful richness on palate with a sweetness that brings charm, a fairly dense body, tight tannins and a long final of good persistency.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Domaine Brunely has existed in the Carichon family for three generations and is one of more larger and well-known producers in Vacqueyras, which is the house specialty.  Total holdings include 198 acres of vines spread between Vacqueyras, Cairanne, Ventoux, Gigondas, and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Stylistically, winemaking veers towards the traditional spectrum here, where no wood is used other than in their Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  Farming is natural.
