Five Star Cellars SuperNova

Five Star Cellars “Supernova”

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Unconventional take on a Bordeaux blend. This is not a typical mix, it is a blend of blends. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Frac normally found at the end of a Cabernet or Merlot blend have been unleashed on their own for a powerhouse wine.
  • The vineyards used for this wine are from the old planting of Seven Hills Vineyard for the Cabernet Franc. The Petit Verdot is from a small vineyard tucked up behind Loess vineyard (Leonetti’s Vineyard) on the east side of the Walla Walla Valley.

Varietal Composition: 63% Petit Verdot, 37% Cabernet Franc

Elaboration: Supernova comes from the Walla Walla Valley on Frasier Bluff Vineyard and Seven Hills Vineyards. It was treated in 30% New French oak, Hungarian and American barrels. Aged 26 months prior to releasing.

Tasting Notes: Beautiful Magenta in color with a youthful hue around the rim. Very lovely color, but quickly overshadowed by the aromas in this wine. Blackberry, plum, meaty, sprinkled throughout with hints of savory seasoning salts. The palate is equally as rich with dark fruits and chocolate carrying though. With bold acid and tannins linking together to take the finish to the next level. This is a monster wine that demands a good meal and is so expressive on the nose and tongue, make sure that meal does this incredible wine justice.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Before he retired as a John Deere dealer in the state of Washington, David Huse came to know many vineyard owners in the Walla Walla Valley. What started as a post-retirement experiment grew into a full-fledged passion for the Huse family. As the Five Star Cellars website proclaims, they use “grapes only from the highest quality vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley.”

David started Five Star Cellars in 2000, and the first vintage consisted of 120 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. That doubled the following year with Cabernet and Merlot. After a 2002 remodel, Dave’s son Matt took over as winemaker and they released their first vintage, which quickly sold out. They added a Syrah to their growing list of vintages and continue to draw fruit from some of the area’s storied vineyard owners.
