Five Star Cellars Syrah
WHY WE LOVE IT
- This is Five Star’s take on the well-known Rhonê varietal Syrah. Walla Walla is a growing region and Syrah a varietal that does well.
- Five Star makes this Syrah from two different vineyards. The Blue Mountain site is very expressive with its fruit, flavors, and bold color. Where as the Les Collines Syrah is very complex, earthy, and much more serious and mature. Together they make a great combination.
- We love the cinnamon and rose petal elements that shine in this fine example of Walla Walla Syrah.
- Extended bottle age before release adds tremendous complexity. Very deep violet in color; it is electric. Cellar this wine!
Varietal Composition: 100% Syrah
Elaboration: The wine was produced in the Walla Walla Valley on Blue Mountain Vineyard and Les Collines Vineyard. It was treated in European 1-2 fill oak. Aged 18 months prior to releasing.
Tasting Notes: Beautiful rose in color with a youthful fuchsia hue around the rim. Very lovely color, but quickly overshadowed by the aromas in this wine. Blackberry, red plum, and slight black cherry aromas are sprinkled throughout with hints of savory seasoning salts. The palate is equally as rich with the red fruits carrying though. With bold acid and tannins linking together to take the finish to the next level. A nice blend of old and new world in a bottle.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND
Before he retired as a John Deere dealer in the state of Washington, David Huse came to know many vineyard owners in the Walla Walla Valley. What started as a post-retirement experiment grew into a full-fledged passion for the Huse family. As the Five Star Cellars website proclaims, they use “grapes only from the highest quality vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley.”
David started Five Star Cellars in 2000, and the first vintage consisted of 120 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. That doubled the following year with Cabernet and Merlot. After a 2002 remodel, Dave’s son Matt took over as winemaker and they released their first vintage, which quickly sold out. They added a Syrah to their growing list of vintages and continue to draw fruit from some of the area’s storied vineyard owners.
