Grgich Hills Posip

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Pošip is an indigenous Croatian variety developed through spontaneous crossing between two varieties from Korčula.
  • This white wine grape variety has been grown for centuries in Croatia on several islands and along the Dalmatian coast, where the cool winds of the Adriatic Sea maintain the perfect temperatures for white grapes.
  • Croatia enjoys a long history of winemaking; records show grapes cultivated there centuries before the birth of Christ.
  • The Pošip grapes were grown on the island of Korčula at a small, steep area of vineyards perched above the Adriatic Sea.

Varietal Composition: 100% Pošip (poe-ship)

Elaboration: The just-picked grapes are brought by boat to the winery, just north of the historic walled city, Dubrovnik, in the southern Dalmatian wine region. fermentation in 70% stainless steel and 30% neutral oak barrels. 6 months in neutral French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: This light, bright wine exhibits aromas of ripe lemon, peach, and honey dew melon, followed by a hint of vanilla and soft honey. On the palate, fresh lemon flavors burst forth, balanced by stone fruit, fresh acidity, and a hint of white pepper with a long dry finish.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Vintners Hall of Fame inductee Miljenko “Mike” Grgich first earned world-wide recognition when the Chardonnay he crafted won the 1976 Paris Tasting, beating the best of France. This tasting helped shatter the myth that only French soil could produce the world’s greatest wines and drawing international attention to Napa Valley wines. Mike then partnered with Austin Hills to open their family-owned-and-operated winery in 1977.

Since 2003, Grgich Hill’s has produced wines that are 100% estate-grown and bottled. Grgich Hills is committed to natural winegrowing and sustainability, they farm their five estate vineyards without artificial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. They are all certified organic.

Grgich Hills Estate is deeply rooted in family. The winery was founded by two families, Grgich and Hills, joined together in the pursuit of creating the best wines in the world. Today, Mike’s daughter, Violet Grgich, is President and Ivo Jeramaz, Mike’s nephew, is Winemaker/VP of Vineyards & Production. Grgich Hills now welcomes a third generation to the winery – Maja Jeramaz, Mike’s grand-niece, and Justin Hills, Austin’s son.
