Luis XIV NV Fondillon Plata

Luis XIV Fondillon Plata

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Luis XIV Fondillón Plata’s denomination of origin is Alicante.
  • It is an historic wine and was sought after around the world. It was even drunk by King Louis XIV of France.
  • It is a blend from wines stored in the barrel room, and which are at least 25 years old.
  • It obtains the character of the Monastrell grape aged in old centenary barrels, without haste and in the silence of an ancestral winery.

Varietal Composition: 100% Monastrell

Elaboration: It is a blend of two barrels. The name of the barrels it is derived from are Cupido and La Cova de Pena.

Tasting Notes: Light brown color and orange tile rim, with medium intensity. On the nose, the warm aromas of dried fruits (hazelnuts, toasted marcona almonds) and very old noble wood stand out.

In the mouth, it is almost dry, friendly and very enveloping. Its aromas of hazelnuts, cinnamon and dried figs are combined with the creamy toasts of centennial oak. Long and clean finish.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

In 2017, David Carbonell of Vins del Comtat and two local families living in the village of Cañada, Alicante, Spain, founded a winery they call Luis XIV. Surprisingly, its roots date back to the 1500s.

In the 1960s, a centuries-old winery ceased operations. Within the closed cellar, were 25 old barrels of wine more than 100 years old, forgotten for more than 60 years. Inside the barrels was Fondillon de Alicante, one of the most sought-after and expensive wines in the world during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It was loved by King Louis XIV of France and other 16th and 17th-century monarchs.
