Weingut Wohlmuth Riesling Ried Edelschuh
WHY WE LOVE IT
- Family run winery for nearly 200 years.
- Because the vineyards are extremely steep, the grapes must be hand- picked from sparse slate soils.
- Weingut Wohlmuth engages in Eco-friendly vinification practices, using no herbicides or pesticides.
Varietal Composition: 100% Riesling
Elaboration: Edelschuh is a historic vineyard which has been referred to as one of the single best vineyards since 1322. It produces very mineral driven wines with outstanding aging potential. Through the high sea altitude very ripe grapes are picked, which have a very good acidity structure. Because of the extreme steepness (up to 90%), the grapes must be either hand picked or picked using rope winch machines. The very meager slate soil is very much reflected in the wines. The soils are red and blue-black slate (paleozoic slate). The whole grapes are crushed and then gently pressed. The fermentation is spontaneous in old 600 l casks, then aged on yeast for 16 months.
Tasting Notes: Concentrated aromas of mandarin, pineapple, lime apricot and dark wet slate—pure minerality.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND
Kitzeck im Sausal is a village that deserves high praise. That’s because it boasts the highest-in-elevation wine estates in Austria. But it takes more than a mountaintop to create great wine. It takes many generations of the Wohlmuth family who have been making 100% single-estate-grown wine here since 1803!
