Weingut Wohlmuth Riesling Ried Steinriegl Strohbart

Weingut Wohlmuth Riesling Ried Steinriegl Strohbart

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • Family run winery for nearly 200 years.
  • Only 2 600L casks. Very German in nose. Only Riesing with much rs – 8g/L. Super limited.
  • Grown in Südsteiermark, or Southern Styria, which is a small wine producing region on the southern border of Austria. It is one of Austria’s 13 DACs (Districtus Austriae Controllatus). The unique climate and terroir here are perfectly suited to the production of crisp, aromatic white wines.
  • Ried Steinriegl “Strawbeard” Riesling holds the highest wine classification in Austria, “Riedenwein”. Due to the special orientation of this Ried Steinriegl vineyard and its altitude and openness to the nearby Alps, this vineyard cools down particularly quickly and severely in the evening, which means that the aromas develop intensively. The extremely meager, red, phyllitic slate soil gives the wines their very own, spicy characteristics.
  • The steepness is a 45-80% gradient. Suggested drinking temperature is 12 °C or 53.6 °F.

Varietal Composition: 100% Riesling

Elaboration: Low yields, laborious manual work and a selective manual harvest is the basis of this vineyard wine. Short maceration time, gentle and slow pressing. Spontaneous fermentation in large used wooden barrels, where it matured on the lees for 14 months.

Tasting Notes: Concentrated fruit of apricots, vineyard peach, lime zest and complex slate spice.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

Kitzeck im Sausal is a village that deserves high praise. That’s because it boasts the highest-in-elevation wine estates in Austria. But it takes more than a mountaintop to create great wine. It takes many generations of the Wohlmuth family who have been making 100% single-estate-grown wine here since 1803!
