La Lomita

Hacienda La Lomita

Hacienda La Lomita was founded in 2009 by Fernando Pérez Castro in the heart of Valle de Guadalupe, Baja, Mexico, north of Ensenada and approximately nine miles from the Pacific near the village of San Antonio de las Minas.

The winery and its estate vineyards are on a northwestern-facing slope in the ejido of Francisco Zarco. Ejido refers to village lands that are communally held in a traditional system of land tenure that combines communal ownership with individual use. The estate grows some of the region’s oldest vines.

The estate has practiced organic viticulture since 2012 and is one of the region’s few certified organic wineries. The vineyard sits at about 1,000 feet in elevation with a soil profile consisting of a mix of clay and granite.

La Lomita’s winemaker is enologist Gustavo Gonzales, who was born in the U.S. and has experience as head winemaker for an Italian winery. His La Lomita wines are highly regarded and appear on the wine lists of some prestigious restaurants. Brilliant artwork by Jorge Tellaeche is featured both in their winery and on the wine labels.

Grapes for all but one wine are sourced from the La Lomita estate with 17 acres under vine. La Lomita produces eight wines with a total annual production of 10,000 cases. Their premium wines are produced using a “free flow” concept, meaning that the way the winery is built allows grapes to move through the production process by gravity and without the use of machines.
