Zaha El Corte

WHY WE LOVE IT

  • This wine consistently receives great ratings year-after-year.
  • 100% Estate grown.

Varietal Composition: 70% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon

Elaboration: Grapes are 100% from estate TeHo (blood of the earth) vineyard in San Carlos, Valle de Uco, Mendoza. The grapes are fermented in small 500 kg bins and aged for 12 months in French oak, 18% new oak.

The grapes were picked by soil and fermented together with 15% full clusters and indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured for 12 months in 500-liter French oak barrels, 15% of them new. It’s very aromatic, and the varieties are very integrated together.

  • Lot 1 Cabacera: This is the very end of each row, where the row begins. This part of the vineyard has very sandy soils, was harvested first on March 28, and was co-fermented with 5% of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Malbec from this lot portrays intense floral aromatics with bright, crisp acidity. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds intense aromas of fresh herb with a touch of eucalyptus.
  • Lot 2 Limestone: This lot is a swath of very rocky, calcareous (chalky, limestone) soil in the vineyard. This lot was harvested second on April 2nd and fermented as 100% Malbec. The Malbec from this vineyard lot portrays a dark fruit profile with a marked mineral character.
  • Lot 3 Silt: This lot is a patch of shallow, fine silt soil in the vineyard. This lot was harvested on April 20th and was co-fermented with 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Malbec from this area of the vineyard shows a black fruit profile and a full, rich mid palate. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds concentrated cassis fruit flavors and excellent structure. Aging in 100% new French oak barrels for 18 months.

Tasting Notes: Floral aromas of orange peel, rose petal and violet blend with more typical scents of tar and char. This Malbec blend is linear in feel but full, without an ounce of flab. Lightly spiced berry, red plum and chocolaty oak flavors finish toasty and tight, but with give.

PRODUCER BACKGROUND

In 2010 Alejandro Sejanovich y Jeff Mausbach elaborated their first two wines (Zaha and Teho), driven by their desire to reflect the terroir characteristics of their Toko and Tomal vineyards. Zaha means “heart of the earth” in the native indigenous language of the local Huarpes. That is how Bodega Teho was born, today it counts with a portfolio that gets bigger year after year, thanks to the continuous research into the diverse micro terroirs of Mendoza.
